Meta has established a dedicated division called Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL) to focus on the development of artificial general intelligence (AGI) at the level of human intelligence. MSL includes core AI research teams working on foundational models such as Llama, and Alexandr Wang, the former CEO of U.S. data annotation company Scale AI, has joined as the head of the division. Last month, Meta acquired a 49% stake in Scale AI for $14.3 billion, bringing Wang and several members of his team on board. In addition, Meta is actively recruiting talent from competitors such as OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic. Recently, former leaders and researchers from OpenAI have joined Meta, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has claimed that Meta offered his employees signing bonuses of up to $100 million. Altman pointed out that excessive compensation competition could harm a healthy company culture. Through this organizational restructuring and aggressive talent acquisition, Meta aims to gain an edge in the race to develop superintelligent AI.
