Chinese AI startup Zhipu AI, which is under U.S. sanctions, has been recognized by OpenAI for making notable progress in the global AI race. Backed by strong support from Beijing, Zhipu AI is expanding its business overseas—including the Middle East, the UK, and Southeast Asia—by providing AI infrastructure solutions to governments around the world. OpenAI stated that Zhipu AI closely collaborates with the Chinese Communist Party and has attracted more than $1.4 billion in state-backed investments. The company is also expected to play a key role in China’s “Digital Silk Road” strategy. Despite being recently added to the U.S. Commerce Department’s Entity List, Zhipu AI continues its aggressive growth, even preparing for an IPO. Meanwhile, OpenAI and the U.S. government are also pursuing large-scale investments and contracts to secure leadership in the global AI market.
