At Bitcoin 2025, Jack Dorsey’s Block Inc. debuted a real-time bitcoin payment pilot at The Venetian in Las Vegas, using a merch truck as a live checkout station. The system uses the Lightning Network for faster, low-cost transactions and allows users to scan a QR code to pay, with Square handling conversions behind the scenes. This marks Block’s boldest move yet to make bitcoin “everyday money,” enabling purchases like T-shirts and hats directly with crypto. Block plans to expand the pilot globally by 2026, depending on regulatory approval, building on its previous “Bitcoin Conversions” tool. Bitcoin Product Lead Miles Suter called the pilot a “significant milestone” in improving bitcoin’s accessibility and usability. Sellers can choose to instantly convert payments to dollars or manage and hold bitcoin through Block’s tools. Block is enhancing its bitcoin ecosystem through Bitkey (wallet), Proto (mining), Spiral (open-source dev), and Cash App integration. Suter emphasized the company’s vision: “We believe the internet needs a native currency — and that’s bitcoin.”
