SoftBank Group recorded an unexpected large-scale deficit in the fourth quarter of 2024. According to the earnings report released on February 13, SoftBank posted a net loss of 369.1 billion yen (approximately $2.4 billion) for the quarter, sharply contrasting with market analysts' expectations of a 298.5 billion yen profit. The primary cause of the loss was the poor performance of its Vision Fund. The Vision Fund investment segment alone suffered a loss of 352.7 billion yen, heavily impacted by declining stock prices of major portfolio companies such as Coupang. The value of Vision Fund 1's public portfolio companies decreased by 2.1% compared to the previous quarter, while investments in private companies fell by 3.3%. Vision Fund 2 also saw a decline in fair value by 3.7%. Meanwhile, SoftBank is expanding its investments in artificial intelligence (AI). The company has committed to investing $3 billion annually in OpenAI and established a joint venture to commercialize AI technologies in Japan.
