SpaceX’s massive Starship rocket exploded at Starbase in Texas ahead of its 10th test flight. The incident occurred on the night of June 18 during a static fire test of the upper-stage spacecraft known as “Ship.” The explosion sent a huge fireball into the night sky, but the company stated that a safety perimeter was maintained at the site and there were no casualties. Starship is the world’s largest and most powerful rocket, currently under development for ambitious space exploration missions such as human settlement on Mars. It consists of the first-stage booster “Super Heavy” and the second-stage spacecraft “Ship,” both designed for full reusability. This explosion adds to a series of recent failures involving the upper stage of Starship. In the test flights conducted in January, March, and May of this year, the upper-stage vehicle also broke apart, highlighting ongoing challenges. In contrast, the Super Heavy booster has achieved some success in reusability and recovery tests. SpaceX is focusing on investigating the cause of the accident and ensuring the safety of the test site. With the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) still investigating the ninth test flight, the schedule for the tenth test flight will inevitably need to be revised.
