Spotify founder Daniel Ek will step down as CEO by the end of this year and transition to the role of Executive Chairman. The company has appointed two internal executives as co-CEOs: Gustav Söderström, co-president and Chief Product & Technology Officer, and Alex Norström, co-president and Chief Business Officer. Ek stated that “this change is simply an adjustment of titles to reflect how we already operate,” adding that he will focus on the company’s long-term vision and maintain strong connections between the board and the co-CEOs. He also noted that Spotify has been profitable for over a year. Since founding Spotify in 2006, Ek has served as its CEO, making this decision a major leadership shift in the company’s history. Beyond music streaming, he has expanded into other ventures, co-founding the health-tech startup Neko in 2018 and launching investment firm Prima Materia in 2021.
