Amazon-owned autonomous vehicle company Zoox has temporarily suspended its driverless testing and issued a voluntary recall of its self-driving software following a recent robotaxi crash in Las Vegas. According to reports filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the company itself, the incident occurred on April 8 and involved a collision between an unoccupied Zoox vehicle and a passenger car. In response, Zoox announced a recall affecting approximately 270 vehicles equipped with a specific version of its autonomous driving system. The company noted that this number does not represent its entire fleet. The recall was prompted by concerns that the software could inaccurately predict the movement of other vehicles, increasing the risk of a crash. Zoox stated that there were no injuries and only minor damage to both vehicles. The crash occurred when a passenger vehicle rapidly approached from a commercial driveway. The Zoox vehicle incorrectly assumed the car would proceed, slowed down, and attempted to steer right. However, the passenger vehicle came to a full stop, resulting in an unavoidable collision despite the robotaxi’s hard braking. Zoox halted all driverless testing operations on the day of the incident, April 8, and launched an internal investigation. Operations resumed on April 17 after the company deployed a software update to its vehicles. The crash and subsequent recall come as Zoox prepares to launch its commercial robotaxi service in Las Vegas. The company confirmed that the incident has not affected its plans to roll out the service later this year.
