Amazon’s autonomous vehicle subsidiary Zoox has been granted an exemption from certain vehicle safety standards by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). This exemption marks the first granted to a U.S.-made autonomous vehicle, enabling Zoox to actively proceed with driverless robotaxi pilot operations. NHTSA has officially closed the investigation into Zoox’s self-certification process, which began in March 2023. Zoox must remove all existing claims that its vehicles comply with federal safety standards. This move is expected to resolve regulatory controversies and accelerate Zoox’s business expansion this year. Zoox is currently operating a robotaxi manufacturing facility in the San Francisco Bay Area, with an annual production capacity of 10,000 vehicles, and has selected Las Vegas as its first commercial service market, planning to begin operations there later this year.
