Renowned roboticist Rodney Brooks, co-founder of iRobot and decades-long MIT researcher, warned investors pouring billions into humanoid robot startups that they're wasting their money. Brooks criticized companies like Tesla and Figure for their approach of teaching robots dexterity by showing them videos of humans performing tasks, calling it "pure fantasy thinking." He pointed out that human hands are incredibly sophisticated organs with about 17,000 specialized touch receptors, which no current robot comes close to matching. Full-sized walking humanoid robots consume massive amounts of energy to stay upright and are dangerous when they fall, with physics dictating that a robot twice the size of today's models would pack eight times the harmful energy. Brooks predicts that in 15 years, successful "humanoid" robots will actually have wheels, multiple arms, and specialized sensors while abandoning the human form. Figure recently announced it received over $1 billion in committed capital in its latest funding round, valuing the company at an astonishing $39 billion. Brooks is thoroughly convinced that today's billions are funding expensive training experiments that will never scale to mass production.
