Google launched Opal, an experimental no-code AI tool for creating mini web applications, through Google Labs as a US-only public beta on July 24. Opal enables "vibe coding" where users can generate functional web apps using simple natural language descriptions like "make an app to order breakfast." The platform chains together AI prompts, models, and tools to create multi-step workflows with a visual editor that allows users to view and modify prompts at each step without coding. Google provides starter templates including apps that convert photos into claymation videos and create quizzes from YouTube videos for learning purposes, which users can customize to their needs. Opal leverages multiple Google AI models including Gemini 2.5 Pro for logic, Imagen for visuals, and AudioLM for audio processing to handle various content generation tasks. Completed apps can be instantly shared via Google Docs-like sharing links, accessible to anyone with a Google account. Currently available only in the US, Opal competes with platforms like Canva, Figma, and Replit in the growing no-code AI development market, targeting non-technical users who want to participate in app development.
