Apple is planning to launch a premium-priced foldable iPhone starting next year. Renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported that Apple is preparing a new product equipped with foldable panels from Samsung Display, with Samsung expected to produce up to 8 million panels for the device next year. However, key components such as the hinge have not yet been finalized. Kuo added that Apple’s plans for the foldable iPhone are not yet set in stone and could change in the future. With iPhone sales growth slowing, Apple is aiming to expand its customer base and stimulate upgrade demand through high-end new products. Meanwhile, competitors such as Huawei and Samsung have been releasing foldable phones since 2019. Although foldable phones offer tablet-sized screens, hardware limitations such as creases in the display and limited market growth have prevented them from becoming mainstream. Last year, foldable phones accounted for only 1.5% of all smartphones sold, and this year’s growth rate was just 3%.

애플이 내년부터 프리미엄 가격대의 폴더블 아이폰 출시를 추진한다. 애플 전문 애널리스트 궈밍치는 애플이 삼성디스플레이의 폴더블 패널을 적용한 신제품을 준비 중이며, 삼성은 내년 최대 800만 개의 패널을 생산할 계획이라고 밝혔다. 다만, 힌지 등 주요 부품은 아직 확정되지 않았다. 궈밍치는 애플의 폴더블 아이폰 계획이 아직 최종 결정된 것은 아니며, 향후 변경될 수 있다고 덧붙였다. 애플은 아이폰 매출 성장세가 둔화된 상황에서 고가 신제품으로 고객층 확대와 업그레이드 수요를 노리고 있다. 한편, 화웨이와 삼성 등 경쟁사들은 이미 2019년부터 폴더블폰을 출시해왔다. 폴더블폰은 태블릿급 화면을 제공하지만, 화면 주름 등 하드웨어 한계와 제한적인 시장 성장세로 아직 대중화에는 이르지 못한 상황이다. 지난해 전체 스마트폰 중 폴더블폰 비중은 1.5%에 불과했으며, 올해 성장률도 3%에 그쳤다.
