Apple is planning to overhaul the naming system for its major operating systems (OS), including iOS, shifting from version numbers to a year-based format. According to Bloomberg, starting with its next round of OS updates, Apple will abandon the incremental numbering system and instead adopt a naming convention similar to that of car models—basing version numbers on the year after release. As a result, the iOS update expected this fall will reportedly be named iOS 26, not iOS 19. The change will apply not only to iOS but also to iPadOS 26, macOS 26, watchOS 26, tvOS 26, and visionOS 26. The new naming scheme is intended to unify the disparate version numbers across Apple’s OS lineup and reduce user confusion. Apple is expected to officially announce the change at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), which will be held on June 9 (local time). The event is also expected to feature a design overhaul of the OS interfaces, inspired by visionOS.
