Adobe has released a new iPhone camera app called Project Indigo, developed in collaboration with former Google Pixel camera engineers. The app is focused on recreating the natural look characteristic of SLR cameras on smartphones. Project Indigo is led by Marc Levoy and Florian Kainz, who popularized computational photography at Google. To address complaints about excessive processing and limited manual controls in existing smartphone cameras, they adopted a method that applies only minimal tone mapping and color adjustment. Users can experience professional-level manual controls and the highest image quality in both JPEG and RAW formats. Notably, the app combines up to 32 underexposed frames to deliver a wider dynamic range and more natural results. It also includes Adobe’s experimental photo features, such as AI-based “Remove Reflections.” Project Indigo is available for free on iPhone 12 Pro and above, or iPhone 14 and above, with an Android version planned for future release.
