Nvidia has officially stated that it strictly complies with U.S. government regulations on AI chip exports. This is the company’s first public response following a $5.5 billion charge related to canceled H20 chip orders after the suspension of exports to China. Nvidia emphasized, “The U.S. government directs which products and countries we can sell to, and we adhere strictly to these instructions.” This statement was released as the House Select Committee on China began an investigation into Nvidia’s AI chip sales to China. The H20 chip, developed to comply with 2022 Biden administration export controls, was until recently permitted for export to China, but sales have now been halted under the latest restrictions. Nvidia also highlighted its economic contributions, including job creation, tax revenue, and reducing the U.S. trade deficit, and clarified that products billed to Singapore and other third countries are actually shipped to destinations such as the U.S. and Taiwan, not China. Meanwhile, Nvidia faces dual pressure from additional “AI diffusion” export controls set to take effect next month and the ongoing congressional investigation.
