OpenAI has undertaken a major restructuring and acquisition to strengthen its applications business. Under the leadership of its new Applications CEO, Fidji Simo, the company is acquiring product analytics firm Statsig in a $1.1 billion deal and appointing its founder, Vijaye Raji, as CTO of Applications. As part of the acquisition, all Statsig employees will join OpenAI while continuing to operate independently out of the company’s Seattle office. Raji will oversee development of ChatGPT and Codex, reporting directly to Simo. In addition, OpenAI has promoted Srinivas Narayanan, who has been leading engineering, to CTO of B2B Applications, while Kevin Weil, the company’s CPO, will transition to the research side as VP of AI for Science. Weil’s former product team, including ChatGPT leadership, will now report directly to Simo.
