In July, Tesla’s sales across Europe plunged 40% year-on-year, with the U.S. carmaker losing ground to Chinese rival BYD. According to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA), Tesla sold 8,837 vehicles last month, down sharply from 14,769 a year earlier. In contrast, BYD’s new car registrations more than tripled, rising from 4,151 to 13,503, securing a 1.2% market share. Tesla remained at 0.8%. Chinese automakers, leveraging lower prices, have been stepping up their push into the European market. A report by JATO Dynamics showed that BYD overtook Tesla in Europe for the first time this spring. Meanwhile, the UK government announced a new subsidy scheme offering up to £3,750 for electric vehicles priced at £37,000 or below. Ford was named as the first beneficiary under the program, with a total of 28 EV models eligible for the grants. Between January and July this year, 1.011 million battery-electric cars were registered across the EU, accounting for 15.6% of the market. During the same period, more than 2.25 million hybrid vehicles were sold, driven by double-digit growth in France, Spain, Germany, and Italy.

JATO 다이내믹스 보고서에 따르면 BYD는 올봄 처음으로 유럽 시장에서 테슬라를 앞질렀다. 한편 영국 정부는 차량가 3만7,000파운드 이하 전기차에 최대 3,750파운드의 보조금을 지급하는 새 지원책을 발표했다. 이에 따라 포드가 첫 수혜 기업으로 지정됐으며, 총 28개 전기차 모델이 지원 대상에 포함됐다. 올해 1~7월 EU 전체에서는 순수 전기차 101만 대가 등록돼 시장 점유율 15.6%를 차지했다. 같은 기간 하이브리드 차량은 225만 대 이상 판매되며 전년 대비 프랑스, 스페인, 독일, 이탈리아 등에서 두 자릿수 성장률을 기록했다.
