The social media platform X (formerly Twitter) experienced outages for most of Monday, causing users difficulty in accessing the service. According to Downdetector, the outages spiked between 5:30 AM and 6:30 AM Eastern Time, with two more severe disruptions occurring later in the morning. X owner Elon Musk attributed the cause of the outage to a "massive cyberattack," suggesting that the attack could have been orchestrated by "a large, coordinated group or a country." While Musk did not provide specific evidence, experts analyzed that his claims could be plausible. Isik Mater, research director at NetBlocks, stated, "Given the pattern of three observed outages, we cannot rule out the possibility of a denial of service (DoS) attack." He added that this outage was "one of the longest in X/Twitter's history." In an interview with Fox Business, Musk claimed that the attack was associated with "IP addresses originating from the Ukraine area." According to network service company Cloudflare, Ukraine has recently been identified as one of the major sources of DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attacks. Cloudflare's Q4 2024 report showed that Ukraine ranked fourth in originating DDoS attacks, following Singapore, Hong Kong, and Indonesia. Musk had previously blamed large-scale attacks for technical issues, such as when a live streaming audio chat with former President Donald Trump malfunctioned last year.
