Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter and CEO of Block, has developed a new messaging app called “Bitchat” that utilizes a Bluetooth mesh network. This app allows users to send and receive messages via Bluetooth without Wi-Fi or cellular signals, and Dorsey’s team claims it can relay messages up to 300 meters—far beyond the typical Bluetooth range of about 100 meters. Bitchat supports end-to-end encryption for enhanced security and operates in a manner similar to Bridgefy, an app that was widely used during the pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong. Bridgefy is also well known as an app invested in by Twitter co-founder Biz Stone. Dorsey released Bitchat to 10,000 beta testers through Apple’s Testflight, but the test is now full. He stated that the app is still under review and that the official release date has not yet been determined.
