China has unveiled a mosquito-sized unmanned aerial vehicle designed for covert military operations, according to state media reports. Developed by the state-owned National University of Defense Technology (NUDT) in Hunan Province, the drone features leaf-shaped wings and three hair-thin legs designed to mimic real insect flight and appearance. It is equipped with ultra-small cameras and microphones to capture images, sound, and electronic signals, making it ideal for covert reconnaissance missions. The tiny size allows it to hide in a palm or slip through windows, making it nearly invisible to the naked eye and difficult to detect with conventional radar. NUDT also presented a four-winged prototype variant that can be operated via smartphone. While these miniature drones face limitations including restricted payloads, short flight times, and limited onboard processing power, researchers have made progress in micro-mechanics and artificial intelligence integration. China previously unveiled a bird-inspired surveillance system modeled after the Eurasian tree sparrow, while the US military also employs small-scale drones like the Norwegian-built Black Hornet microdrone.

중국이 은밀한 군사작전용으로 설계된 모기 크기의 무인항공기(UAV)를 공개했다고 관영매체가 보도했다. 후난성의 국유 국방과학기술대학(NUDT)에서 개발한 이 드론은 잎 모양의 날개와 머리카락처럼 가는 3개의 다리를 가진 설계로 실제 곤충의 비행과 외관을 모방했다. 초소형 카메라와 마이크로폰을 장착해 이미지, 음성, 전자신호를 포착할 수 있어 은밀한 정찰 임무에 최적화됐다. 손바닥 안에 숨거나 창문을 통과할 수 있을 정도로 작아 육안으로는 거의 보이지 않고 기존 레이더로 탐지하기 어렵다. NUDT는 스마트폰으로 조작 가능한 4개 날개를 가진 프로토타입 변형 모델도 함께 선보였다. 이런 초소형 드론은 제한된 탑재량, 짧은 비행시간, 온보드 처리능력 부족 등의 한계가 있지만 미세역학과 인공지능 통합 분야에서 진전을 이뤘다고 연구진은 밝혔다. 중국은 이전에도 유라시아 참새를 모델로 한 조류형 감시시스템을 공개한 바 있으며, 미군도 노르웨이산 블랙 호넷 등 소형 드론을 활용하고 있다.
