Chinese luxury electric car brand Zeekr has reportedly raised $440 million in an initial public offering (IPO) in the United States. Zeekr, an electric vehicle brand of Chinese private automaker Geely, sold 21 million American Depositary Shares (ADSs) at $21 per share the previous day, the Financial Times reported. This was at the high end of the expected offering price range of $18 to $21 per share. Zeke will list on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) today, making it one of the largest IPOs by a Chinese company in the past three years. Zeke, a luxury electric vehicle brand of China's Geely, was spun off from Geely in 2021 and is looking to expand into Europe and South America before launching in the United States. It has already started selling in Sweden and the Netherlands. But Zeke's listing comes at a time when the U.S. and Europe are looking to impose new trade barriers on Chinese-made technology. The Biden administration has threatened to increase import tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles from 25% to 100%. The European Commission is investigating imports of Chinese electric vehicles and is expected to raise tariffs in the coming months. Nevertheless, the Chinese EV industry is looking for growth opportunities in overseas markets. Ziker's successful IPO is seen as an indicator that investors remain optimistic about the future of the Chinese EV industry.
