The Canadian province of Ontario has canceled a contract worth 100 million Canadian dollars (approximately 68 million US dollars) with Elon Musk's Starlink as a retaliatory measure against the United States' imposition of tariffs. Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced this decision on February 4th through social media. This action came shortly after US President Donald Trump declared a 25% tariff on Canadian imports. Ford stated, "Ontario won't do business with people hellbent on destroying our economy," and criticized Musk as being "part of the Trump team." He also announced that Ontario would ban American companies from all provincial contracts until the US government withdraws the tariffs. The contract, signed in November 2024, was intended to provide high-speed internet to remote areas of Ontario. With this decision, Starlink has lost a significant business opportunity.
