A robo-taxi accident involving GM's self-driving subsidiary Cruise is being investigated by prosecutors, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and other government agencies. On Oct. 2 of last year, Cruise's robotaxi struck a pedestrian in San Francisco and dragged him about 20 feet. The pedestrian was first knocked down by a human-driven car, which Cruz's robotaxi was unable to avoid and slammed into. Immediately after the accident, Cruise hid the fact of the accident and claimed that the human-driven vehicle was to blame. A few days later, video footage of the accident was released, proving Cruise's claim to be false. The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) subsequently suspended Cruz's license, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) launched an investigation into the accident. The investigation by prosecutors and the SEC will likely focus on determining whether Cruz concealed the accident and misled regulators. Since the crash, Cruise has undergone a major restructuring, including the resignation of its co-founder and CEO and a 24% reduction in its workforce. Depending on the outcome of the investigation, Cruise's self-driving business could take a major hit.
