A Miami jury in Florida found Tesla liable for a fatal traffic accident that occurred in the Florida Keys in 2019, resulting in the death of 22-year-old Naibel Benavides Leon and serious injury to her boyfriend, Dillon Angulo. The jury determined that a defect in the vehicle’s Autopilot software contributed to the crash, ordering Tesla to pay a total of $243 million (approximately €209 million) to the victim’s family and the injured survivor. This sum includes $200 million in punitive damages and $43 million in compensatory damages. The accident happened when the driver was searching for his phone that had fallen to the floor while driving, causing him to run a stop sign and a red light at an intersection. The court pointed out that the Autopilot system failed to disengage when the driver became distracted and did not provide any warnings to the driver before the crash.
