Former U.S. President Donald Trump pressured Apple CEO Tim Cook to stop expanding iPhone production in India and to increase manufacturing in the United States instead. At a recent business summit in Doha, Trump stated that “India is a high-tariff country” and demanded that production be shifted to the U.S. rather than India. Earlier this year, Apple announced a $500 billion investment over the next four years to strengthen its manufacturing capabilities in the United States. However, the company has been diversifying its production base, with about 20% of iPhones now being manufactured in India. Notably, following the Indian government’s approval of Foxconn’s Apple chip manufacturing project, Apple plans to import most of the iPhones sold in the U.S. from India by 2026.
