Chinese social media company TikTok has filed a lawsuit against the U.S. government to block a law that would prevent it from using its app without selling a subsidiary. In its lawsuit, TikTok claims the ban is a “severe infringement on the free speech rights of the company and its 170 million U.S. users.” “The U.S. government has offered only unconvincing concerns to justify this action, and we ask the court to halt this legislation,” it said. US President Joe Biden signed the bill into law last month, citing national security concerns. The U.S. government has consistently raised concerns that TikTok's Chinese ownership could lead to U.S. user data falling into the hands of the Chinese government or being used for propaganda purposes. TikTok has maintained that it is independent, and its parent company, Bytedance, has said it has no plans to sell the business.
