French lawmaker Arthur Delaporte has requested a criminal investigation by the Paris prosecutor’s office, accusing TikTok of endangering the health and lives of children and adolescents. Delaporte concluded after a six-month parliamentary inquiry that TikTok deliberately harmed users’ mental health. During the process, allegations of perjury by TikTok executives also emerged. The inquiry’s final report likened TikTok to a “slow poison” and recommended banning social media use for children under 15, as well as imposing curfews restricting access for adolescents aged 15 to 18 during nighttime hours. The report also called for new legislation to penalize “digitally negligent parents.” TikTok strongly denied the accusations, asserting that it has implemented numerous AI-based safety features aimed at protecting young users. Recently, regulatory scrutiny over generative AI and social media has intensified in France, including a lawsuit filed by seven families against TikTok.
