AI developer Hugging Face has unveiled a small robotics AI model called ‘SmolVLA.’ Composed of 450 million parameters, this model is efficient enough to run on a MacBook or a typical consumer-grade GPU. SmolVLA was trained on robotics datasets shared by various communities, including those from Google Drive, and demonstrates superior performance compared to larger models in both virtual and real-world environments. It also supports an “asynchronous inference stack” feature that separates the processing of a robot’s visual and auditory information from its action control, enabling faster responses. Since last year, Hugging Face has been focusing on building a low-cost robotics ecosystem. Recently, the company acquired French robotics startup Pollen Robotics and launched affordable robotic systems. SmolVLA is available for anyone to download and use from the Hugging Face platform. Industry experts see the competition in the open robotics market intensifying, with players like Nvidia and K-Scale Labs also actively involved.
