Genetic testing company 23andMe has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in a Missouri federal court. CEO Anne Wojcicki has immediately resigned, with Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Joseph Selsavage appointed as interim CEO. Wojcicki will remain on the board of directors to continue supporting the company. Once valued at $6 billion, 23andMe has seen its stock price plummet in recent years due to failure to generate recurring revenue and lack of a viable business model. The company's current market capitalization has fallen below $20 million, and it recorded a loss of $400 million in 2024. Through this bankruptcy plan, the company aims to sell its assets and will seek qualified bidders over a 45-day period. Wojcicki has announced her intention to acquire the company as an independent bidder. 23andMe has also been embroiled in controversy over privacy issues. Following a 2023 incident where hackers compromised data of about 7 million customers, the California Attorney General advised residents to delete their genetic data. The company has stated that there will be no changes to how customer data is managed during the sale process.
