Tech giant Meta is reportedly exploring the use of stablecoins for managing payouts, according to a Fortune report citing five sources familiar with the matter. The company has also hired Ginger Baker, a VP of product with crypto experience, to support the initiative. This move marks a notable return to the crypto space for Meta, following the collapse of its 2019 Libra project, which was later renamed Diem and ultimately shut down in 2022 amid regulatory backlash. If Meta proceeds, it will reenter the crypto sector just as stablecoins are gaining mainstream traction among both crypto-native and traditional finance players. Companies like Ripple, Mastercard, Visa, ING, and Stripe are investing in the space, and Standard Chartered predicts the stablecoin market could hit $2 trillion by 2028. However, U.S. regulatory uncertainty remains a challenge. A congressional vote to begin debate on a new stablecoin regulation bill failed on Thursday, with lawmakers citing concerns over consumer protections and former President Donald Trump’s association with USD1, a stablecoin from World Liberty Financial.
