Starting June 1, the Philippine government will impose a 12% value-added tax (VAT) on digital services, leading to price increases for major subscription-based platforms such as Netflix and Google. This move is in accordance with Republic Act No. 12023 (RA 12023), which amended the tax code to include digital services in the list of goods and services subject to VAT. Under this law, digital services are defined as any service that is automated and delivered over the internet or other electronic networks using information technology. This includes online marketplaces, cloud services, online advertising, streaming platforms, and digital content. Netflix has increased its mobile plan from P149 to P169 per month, and its premium plan from P549 to P619. Google has also informed users via email about price increases for services such as Google One.
필리핀 정부가 6월 1일부터 디지털 서비스에 대해 12%의 부가가치세(VAT)를 적용함에 따라 넷플릭스, 구글 등 주요 구독 기반 플랫폼의 요금이 인상된다. 이는 공화국법 제12023호(RA 12023)에 따른 것으로, 디지털 서비스도 기존 재화 및 서비스와 동일하게 VAT 부과 대상에 포함된 데 따른 조치다. 해당 법은 정보기술을 기반으로 인터넷이나 전자 네트워크를 통해 자동화된 방식으로 제공되는 모든 서비스를 디지털 서비스로 정의하며, 온라인 마켓플레이스, 클라우드 서비스, 온라인 광고, 스트리밍 플랫폼 및 디지털 콘텐츠 등이 포함된다. 넷플릭스는 모바일 요금을 월 P149에서 P169로, 프리미엄 요금은 P549에서 P619로 각각 인상했다. 구글 역시 구글 원(Google One)과 같은 서비스의 가격 인상 사실을 이용자에게 이메일로 안내했다.
