Google unveiled major updates to Project Mariner, its experimental AI web-browsing agent, at I/O 2025. The new version can handle up to 10 tasks simultaneously using cloud-based virtual machines, freeing users to multitask. It will be available to U.S. subscribers of the $249.99/month AI Ultra plan, with global rollout planned. Developers can integrate Mariner into apps via the Gemini API and Vertex AI. Mariner enables users to complete tasks like buying tickets or groceries without visiting websites, relying solely on chat with the AI. It competes with other agentic tools from OpenAI, Amazon, and Anthropic, all still in experimental phases. With the upcoming “AI Mode” in Search and “Agent Mode” for advanced web-based workflows, Google plans to expand this ecosystem.
