메타가 과거 VR 사업부 책임자였던 팔머 러키의 방산업체 안두릴(Anduril Industries)과 함께 미군용 VR·AR 헤드셋 개발에 나선다고 발표했다.
두 회사가 공동 개발하는 '이글아이(EagleEye)' 시스템은 병사들의 청각과 시각 능력을 향상시키는 센서를 탑재해 수 마일 떨어진 드론 탐지나 숨겨진 표적 식별이 가능하다. 이 시스템은 병사들이 AI 기반 무기체계를 조작하고 상호작용할 수 있도록 지원하며, 안두릴의 자율성 소프트웨어와 메타의 AI 모델이 핵심 기술로 활용된다. 메타와 안두릴은 최대 1,400억원(1억 달러) 규모의 미군 VR 하드웨어 계약에 공동 입찰했으며, 이는 메타에게 국방부와의 가장 큰 규모 협력이 될 전망이다. 이 계약은 마이크로소프트가 기능적인 VR 헤드셋 개발에 실패한 후 안두릴이 주계약업체가 된 308조원(220억 달러) 규모 미군 웨어러블 프로젝트의 일부다.
러키는 2017년 정치적 기부금 논란으로 메타에서 해고된 후 다시 협력하게 된 것에 대해 "내 모든 장난감을 다시 찾았다"고 표현했다. 이번 파트너십은 실리콘밸리의 이념적 변화와 빅테크 기업들의 국방 사업 진출 확대를 보여주는 사례로 평가된다.
Meta Platforms announced a partnership with Anduril Industries, the defense company founded by Palmer Luckey, Meta's former VR chief, to develop ruggedized VR and AR headsets for the U.S. Army. The system, called EagleEye, will feature sensors that enhance soldiers' hearing and vision capabilities, enabling the detection of drones from miles away and the identification of hidden targets. The technology will enable soldiers to operate and interact with AI-powered weapon systems, which are powered by Anduril's autonomy software and Meta's AI models. Meta and Anduril have jointly bid on an Army contract worth up to $100 million for VR hardware devices, which would mark Meta's most significant partnership with the Defense Department. This contract is part of a larger $22 billion Army wearables project led by Anduril after Microsoft failed to deliver functional VR headsets. Luckey, who was fired from Meta in 2017 over a controversial political donation, expressed satisfaction about regaining access to his former VR designs, saying "I finally got all my toys back." The partnership represents Silicon Valley's ideological evolution and Big Tech's expanding embrace of defense work under the Trump administration's push for commercial technology adoption in military applications.
