Apple is reportedly considering adopting artificial intelligence (AI) models from OpenAI or Anthropic for the next-generation upgrade of Siri. At WWDC 2024, Apple unveiled significantly enhanced Siri features, including understanding personal context and performing actions within apps, but faced difficulties in actual deployment and officially announced a delay in March 2025. While Apple currently uses OpenAI’s ChatGPT for some Apple Intelligence features, it is unusual for the company to rely entirely on external AI for Siri. Until now, Apple has implemented its AI capabilities using its self-developed “Apple Foundation Models” and had planned to launch a new Siri based on this technology in 2026. This shift also reflects changes in Apple’s internal AI strategy. Recently, leadership of Apple’s AI organization shifted from John Giannandrea to Craig Federighi, while the Siri team is now led by Mike Rockwell. This suggests that Apple is adjusting its strategy to combine in-house technology with external collaboration as it considers adopting third-party AI.
