Elon Musk's artificial intelligence startup xAI sued Apple and OpenAI on Monday, alleging an "anticompetitive scheme" to thwart AI competition. The 61-page complaint filed in Texas federal court accuses the companies of conspiring to maintain monopolies in the smartphone and generative AI markets. The lawsuit claims Apple favors OpenAI's ChatGPT in App Store rankings while discriminating against competitors like Musk's Grok chatbot and X app. Apple partnered with OpenAI last year to integrate ChatGPT into iPhone, iPad, and Mac products, with ChatGPT currently ranking No. 1 in the US iOS App Store's free apps section. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman responded by alleging that Musk manipulates X to benefit his own companies, while OpenAI called the lawsuit part of "Musk's ongoing pattern of harassment." Musk co-founded OpenAI with Altman in 2015 but left in 2018 due to disagreements, and previously sued the company last year for breach of contract. Apple's App Store practices have been the subject of multiple antitrust challenges, including a DOJ lawsuit over iPhone ecosystem monopoly and Epic Games' ongoing case.
