Generative AI startup Anthropic has reached a settlement in a class action lawsuit brought by a group of fiction and nonfiction authors. The terms of the settlement were not disclosed. The case, known as Bartz v. Anthropic, centered on the company’s use of books — including pirated copies — to train its large language models (LLMs). While the court ruled that Anthropic’s use of the books qualified as fair use, the company still faced financial liability for relying on unauthorized materials. Anthropic has framed the ruling as a victory for generative AI and welcomed the outcome. “We acquired books for one purpose only — to build large language models — and the court clearly held that such use was fair,” the company stated.
