SK Hynix and Samsung must now obtain licenses to purchase US-made semiconductor manufacturing equipment for use in China. According to the Federal Register, the US Department of Commerce has revoked previous authorizations that allowed both companies to receive American equipment at their Chinese factories. While the Commerce Department introduced sweeping restrictions in 2022 on the export of US semiconductor equipment to China, it had previously granted exemptions to Samsung and SK Hynix. This latest move is expected to make advanced chip production in China more difficult for both firms. US equipment makers such as KLA Corp, Lam Research, and Applied Materials are also likely to be affected by the tightened regulations. The new rule takes effect in 120 days, and future exports of related equipment will require separate licenses.
