Google has strongly denied recent reports claiming that Gmail faced a “major security issue.” In a statement, the company said, “Gmail’s protections remain strong, and claims that we issued a broad warning to all users are entirely false.” Earlier, some media outlets reported that Google had sent an emergency alert to all 2.5 billion Gmail users in connection with a phishing attack. Google clarified, however, that the incident referred to a Salesforce instance phishing campaign first reported in June, and that all affected users had been individually notified by early August. Google noted that while it is unclear how the recent reports became distorted, its security systems continue to block more than 99.9% of phishing and malware attempts. The company further emphasized the importance of accurate reporting in this space and urged users to set up secure authentication methods, such as passkeys, for maximum protection.
