OpenAI has unveiled a new AI video and audio generation system, “Sora 2,” which is effectively a deepfake creation platform. Sora is offered in the form of a social media app, allowing users to create highly realistic videos that appear to show real people speaking real words. Consumers can use this app to produce video content that is nearly indistinguishable from reality. In a demo, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman appeared drinking from a gigantic mango-flavored juice pack and making a joke — but neither the person, the object, nor the words were real. All of it was generated by AI. Reporters who viewed the demo noted it was difficult to tell whether it was genuine or not. OpenAI described Sora 2 as a potential “ChatGPT moment for video generation” and said it was released for the public to freely experiment with its new AI capabilities.
