Two brothers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have been arrested for allegedly using cutting-edge technology to exploit a security hole in the Ethereum blockchain to steal $25 million worth of cryptocurrency. According to the New York City-based tabloid newspaper The New York Post, federal prosecutors in Manhattan announced the indictment of brothers Anton Peraire-Bueno, 24, and James Peraire-Bueno, 28. called the case “groundbreaking” and said it was the first U.S. criminal prosecution of such a fraudulent scheme. Prosecutors say the brothers stole $25 million worth of cryptocurrency from a trader in just 12 seconds in April 2023 by infiltrating an ongoing trade and manipulating the path of cryptocurrency movement through an elaborate scam, “The defendants' scheme calls into question the reliability of the blockchain itself,” said U.S. Attorney Damian Williams. The New York Post notes that the incident shows that even in blockchains, otherwise known as decentralized systems, security vulnerabilities exist and can be exploited, Cryptocurrencies are still in their infancy, and the revelation that vulnerabilities exist for such fraudulent activity could shake investor confidence, the Post warned.
