ByteDance, the owner of TikTok, has released an upgraded AI model, Doubao-1.5-pro, which it claims surpasses OpenAI’s latest reasoning model, o1, in a benchmark test (AIME). This move intensifies the global competition in AI development. Earlier this week, Chinese AI startup DeepSeek introduced DeepSeek-R1, an open-source model said to rival OpenAI's o1. DeepSeek gained attention last month for its V3 language model outperforming OpenAI and Meta models at a significantly lower cost. ByteDance and DeepSeek's aggressive pricing strategies could challenge OpenAI's dominance by offering more affordable alternatives. Other Chinese firms like Moonshot AI, Minimax, and iFlyTek have also recently launched reasoning models. OpenAI initiated this competitive landscape with its ChatGPT and Strawberry models, the latter excelling in advanced problem-solving. OpenAI plans to release its o3 mini reasoning model soon. ByteDance’s pricing undercuts competitors, with costs as low as 2 yuan per million tokens for Doubao-1.5-pro-32k, far below OpenAI’s rates.
