OpenAI has completed the largest private tech funding round on record. The $40 billion financing values the ChatGPT maker at $300 billion, with SoftBank leading the round with $30 billion, joined by Microsoft, Coatue, Altimeter and Thrive. OpenAI plans to use the fresh capital to expand AI research and scale its computing infrastructure, with about $18 billion allocated to the Stargate project, a joint venture between SoftBank, OpenAI, and Oracle. ChatGPT now boasts 500 million weekly users, and OpenAI expects its revenue to triple to $12.7 billion by the end of this year. The funding could be slashed by as much as $10 billion if the company doesn't restructure into a for-profit entity by December 31.
