Amazon will launch the first internet satellite for "Project Kuiper" on April 9 at 12 p.m. ET. The launch will take place at the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida using United Launch Alliance's (ULA) Atlas V rocket and will be livestreamed on ULA's official website. Project Kuiper aims to deploy a constellation of 3,236 satellites in low Earth orbit to provide high-speed internet globally. Amazon has invested approximately $10 billion in the project and must meet the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) requirement to have half of the satellites, or 1,618, in orbit by 2026. Amazon successfully launched two prototype satellites in 2023 and plans to use this launch to validate the final satellite design. Rajeev Badyal, Vice President of Project Kuiper, stated that this mission represents a critical step toward commercial service, marking the first time such a large number of satellites will be deployed simultaneously. Project Kuiper will compete with Elon Musk's Starlink and aims to serve underserved areas, governments, and businesses with reliable internet connectivity.
