Families of victims who died or were injured in crashes involving Tesla's self-driving technology have raised concerns that Elon Musk's influence could weaken government regulations on autonomous vehicles. Seven families sent a letter to Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, warning that the Trump administration might repeal the Standing General Order (SGO), a Biden-era policy requiring automakers, including Tesla, to report accidents involving advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) or automated driving technologies. In the letter, the families emphasized that this critical regulation is at risk due to Musk’s influence and media reports. They also highlighted a 2019 fatal crash in Key Largo, Florida, involving a Tesla in autopilot mode, noting that data from this incident contributed to safety improvements for autonomous vehicles. A Department of Transportation spokesperson stated that Secretary Duffy takes these concerns seriously and remains committed to ensuring objective investigations by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The department reiterated its focus on enforcing safety laws for all automakers.
