Local media reported that FuriosaAI, a South Korean startup manufacturing AI application chips, has rejected Meta's $800 million acquisition offer and decided to focus on developing and producing its own AI chips instead. According to the report, negotiations broke down due to disagreements over post-acquisition business strategy and organizational structure, rather than price issues. Like other tech companies building large language models (LLMs) for various AI applications, Meta has been trying to reduce its reliance on Nvidia for chips specialized in training and building LLMs. Meta unveiled its own AI chips last year and announced plans in January to invest up to $65 billion this year to support its AI initiatives. Meanwhile, FuriosaAI is reportedly in discussions with investors to raise approximately $48 million (70 billion KRW) and aims to complete the fundraising this month. Founded in 2017 by June Paik, who previously worked at Samsung Electronics and AMD, FuriosaAI has developed two AI chips, 'Warboy' and 'Renegade (RNGD)', to challenge Nvidia and AMD. FuriosaAI announced that it has completed testing the RNGD chip, which is said to be best suited for inference models, in collaboration with LG AI Research and Saudi Aramco. LG AI Research plans to use RNGD chips in its AI infrastructure, and FuriosaAI plans to launch these chips in the latter half of this year.
