Microsoft has stopped some services to an Israeli military unit after confirming its technology was used to spy on Palestinian civilians in large numbers. Brad Smith, Microsoft's president, said using the company's technology for mass civilian surveillance violates their service terms. An investigation by The Guardian newspaper and Israeli media found that an Israeli defense unit used Microsoft's cloud service "Azure" to store huge amounts of phone calls from ordinary Palestinians. These collected phone conversations were used to help military operations in Gaza and the West Bank, the investigation showed. Microsoft said it didn't directly check customer data but confirmed these facts through records of Netherlands data center usage and AI service consumption. The company told Israel's Ministry of Defense it would stop providing certain cloud storage and AI services. Earlier this year, a UN expert urged Microsoft and other global companies to stop doing business with Israel.
