The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has asked Coinbase to halt trading in all cryptocurrencies except for Bitcoin. This request is a sign of the SEC's intention to assert regulatory authority over a broader portion of the market, as revealed by Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong. The SEC took legal action against Coinbase last month for failing to register as a broker. According to the SEC's request, if Coinbase were to remove all tokens except for Bitcoin from the more than 200 it offers, the SEC would be able to exercise wider authority over the crypto industry. Armstrong stated that such a request could potentially signify the end of the crypto industry in the U.S., making it a better choice to seek a court ruling.
