As part of the DEF CON event, the world's largest hacking conference, held in Las Vegas from August 11th to August 13th, nearly nearly 2,200 participants had 50 minutes to trick industry-leading chatbots, or large-scale language models (LLMs), into performing prohibited tasks such as generating fake news, making defamatory statements, or giving potentially dangerous instructions. "It's accurate to call this hackathon the first public evaluation of multiple LLMs," said a White House Office of Science and Technology Policy official.
