US community site Reddit, which sparked a meme-stock craze last year, said in February that it was the victim of a targeted phishing scam that exposed internal documents, dashboards, code and contracts, and the information of some advertisers and current and former employees. While no data appears to have been exfiltrated so far, ransomware organization BlackCat (ALPHV) is claiming to have 80GB of compressed data related to the hack. In a post dubbed "The Reddit Files," BlackCat announced that it would delete the information if Reddit paid $4.5 million and reversed its API price hike.

Reddit has announced changes to its API terms that will restrict the use of its content pipeline to train artificial intelligence models. While the API will remain free for certain purposes, such as building moderation tools or for educational and research purposes, commercial usage will require a separate agreement with Reddit and an undisclosed cost.

On the heels of Twitter's decision to limit third-party access to its data, Reddit announced today that it will begin charging for API usage. "Going forward, companies that crawl data from Reddit and don't return any value to our users will have to pay," said Reddit co-founder Steve Huffman of the decision to charge for API access. However, Reddit's API will continue to be free for researchers who want to study Reddit for non-commercial purposes.

Reddit is in the midst of an hours-long outage that’s affecting its websites and apps, according to the company’s status page. I’m consistently seeing an error message when trying to load Reddit on my Chrome browser. However, things may start to come back soon, though slowly. “We’ve implemented our fix and are slowly allowing things to ramp back up,” Reddit’s status account tweeted at 7:18PM ET. That said, Reddit cautioned that “we’re not yet out of the woods.”
