Bitcoin dropped more than 4% on Monday morning in Asia, falling to a three-week low of $96,606. The smaller cryptocurrency Ethereum fell about 12%, returning to levels not seen since early November. Over the weekend, U.S. President Donald Trump imposed tariffs of 25% on Mexican and most Canadian imports, and 10% on Chinese goods, starting Tuesday. Cryptocurrencies are traded 24 hours a day, including weekends, and have recently been sensitive to the overall market sentiment. Investors believe that tariffs could negatively impact economic growth and corporate earnings. Chris Weston, head of research at Pepperstone, said, "Cryptocurrency is really the only way to express risk over the weekend, and on news like this, crypto acts as a risk proxy." At the same time, there is additional downward pressure on the cryptocurrency market, which had shown strong gains following Trump's election. Some investors have felt disappointed by the lack of immediate measures to boost cryptocurrencies or ease regulations since Trump took office.
