Autonomous vehicle company Waymo has reached a cumulative total of 10 million robotaxi rides across North America. This figure has doubled in just the past five months. Waymo is currently providing approximately 250,000 paid autonomous rides per week in U.S. cities including Austin, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and the Phoenix area. Speaking at the Google I/O developer conference, co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana said, “Waymo Driver is becoming deeply integrated into people’s everyday lives.” The company recently received approval to expand its robotaxi service to additional areas within the San Francisco Bay Area, including San Jose. While Waymo remains unprofitable, it emphasized that it is focused on building a sustainable and profitable business model. Meanwhile, competitor Tesla is planning to launch its own robotaxi service in Austin next month. Unlike Tesla’s camera-based approach, Waymo continues to rely on advanced sensors like lidar to prioritize safety. Waymo stated, “We’re the only company that has operated autonomous rides 24 hours a day for nearly five years,” reaffirming its stance that safety must come before cost.

Pony.ai announced it has received a license to operate its self-driving taxis in China, the first company to achieve the permit, having 100 robotaxis in operation throughout Nansha, Guangzhou, charging riders fares alongside traditional taxis. The company's robotaxi service has completed over 700,000 orders, with nearly 80% repeat users and 99% of the passengers giving positive comments after their trips.
